Winter rears its ugly head, with winds howling and ice pellets sticking to everything in its path. The storm brought down tree limbs and power lines across the city. Power outages hit many neighbourhoods, including mine. Looking out the window across the lake, flashes of lightning illuminate the night sky and the claps of thunder booming, which followed. I love thunderstorms; they intrigue me, and the sound of the storm calms me.

AMADEUS GOOD MORNING BEAUTIFUL, I MISS YOU.

DEVON GOOD MORNING TO YOU! THE WEATHER IS DREADFUL TODAY.

I AM IN A HURRY, I WILL MESSAGE YOU LATER.

Today is the day for the big meeting with the family of my deceased client. The son, James, has demanded this meeting. I am not looking forward to seeing him again. He is arrogant. I need my grey pinstripe suit for such occasions, which I pair it with a light blue and black heels. My hair pulled back into a tight bun and my black Gucci frame glasses give me that librarian look. Red lipstick was the final touch needed to exude confidence and power.

Stepping outside, I see the sky is a dull grey and the weather forecast calls for more rain or even freezing rain. The Uber I called is waiting to drive me to the office. The traffic is horrendous in the downtown core. Drivers honking their horns and giving people the finger. Several accidents hold up the traffic. Another good reason for someone else to drive.

My assistant, Linda, is waiting for me, taking my coat and lets me know there’s coffee waiting in my office. Mr. Vaughan, the client’s lawyer, is the first to arrive thirty minutes early. Linda advises me he would like to speak to me before the others arrive. He is standing in the hall. He’s quite an attractive man, very tall in his late 40s, slim build with short dark hair. The grey sprinkled throughout give him that distinguished look. Linda escorts him to my office. I reached out to shake his hand and asks me to call him Adrian.

“It is a pleasure to meet you, Adrian. Please have a seat.

His voice is soft and soothing. Glancing at his attire as he took his seat, he was wearing the same power suit that I am, a shade or two darker but still pinstriped and the light blue shirt and dark blue tie.

“What is the plan for the meeting?” I asked.

“When the family arrives, I will read the Will. I ask that you follow my lead during the meeting. This family is full of alpha type personalities, very much unlike their mother who was a gentle soul she was always giving and in kind.”

“All right, I will. Thank you for that.” I said.

I see the sisters, Jordan, and Julia arrive almost blinding me with the colors they had worn. Jordan is dressed in a hot pink pantsuit and stood out like a sore thumb. Julia was in a two-tone yellow-black jacket dress. They looked as though they both should be on the runway, modeling. Linda escorted them into the boardroom, offering them tea and coffee while they wait for their brother’s arrival. I check myself in the mirror before Mr. Vaughan and I head into the boardroom. I gathered my notes and computer and saw the brother strolling in, shaking his overcoat from the drops of rain. His look of indigence was noticed by all. As I expected, he is well dressed in a black suit with a black shirt which is open to the third button, exposing his chest. His medium length hair is slicked back, and he is clean shaven. I called out to him, and he followed Mr. Vaughan and I to the boardroom with the others.

He helps himself to the coffee on the credenza before taking a seat at the head of the table. He immediately insults the drab-looking boardroom and cheap looking furniture to which I wanted to tell him it was not cheap, and it was not drab. I really dislike this man.

Jordan tells him to sit down and shut up. I closed the door and put my belongings on the table thinking to myself, well they told him. He snarls at them and takes a sip of his coffee.

Mr. Vaughan stands up and reads the Will. I take the time to watch each of their faces as he read out the added items.

Jordan and Julia had tears in their eyes. James’s scowl was looking more like rage.

Hearing Mr. Vaughan reading the Will, it hit me it differed from I had on file. I am stunned to hear that I have been made the executor. I make a note to discuss this with Mr. Vaughan in private.

Naming several charities is a new development now. Seeing everyone’s expressions, I knew I wasn’t the only one feeling that way. She has significantly cut them back on what was in the copy I had. Before the reading was finished, James’s fist came slamming down on the table as he stood up ranting. “This is fucking ridiculous. This is no way in hell that this will is the latest will. Mother would never have done this to me.”

That is when the argument got more heated. Mr. Vaughan stood and walked towards the door. I followed, and we went to my office.

“Mr. Vaughan, this is not the same copy of the Will that I have. I am quite shocked at the changes. As her financial advisor, this is a conflict of interest for me to be her executor of the Will.”

Adrian said, “this is her Will, and you are the executor. I Will make sure that everything is in order, and I will collaborate with you so that no questions and nothing can be contested. I expect is satisfactory to you.” Before I had time to respond. Adrian stated, “They are expected to have a spirited quarrel amongst themselves.”

After about 15 minutes, I asked Linda to go in with fresh coffee and biscuits and to gauge the atmosphere and come back and tell us. She came back dumbfounded, she said “please do not send me back in there again, they are still yelling and screaming. They are a bunch of lunatics. I have never seen such bad or rude people in my life. I can imagine it’s not pleasant to have to deal with these people, and I don’t envy either of you.

Mr. Vaughan suggested we give them another 10 minutes before we go back in to end the meeting. He again asks me to take his lead when he ends the meeting and then leave with him.

Giving them the extra few minutes, we finally returned to the room. Mr. Vaughan said, “this concludes the reading of the Last Will and Testament of Mrs. Elenore Richardson, and this meeting is now concluded. The paperwork for the distribution of the estate as per Mrs. Richardson’s wishes and Miss Cartwright will execute the Will as written will be prepared within two weeks.” To that Mr. Vaughan and I exited the boardroom, leaving the door open.

I instructed Linda to take their coats to them and escort them out.

I started the conversation behind closed doors. “Thank you for the warning about James. He is a real piece of work, and you did not embellish on how he would react. His explosive behavior was much more than I had expected and dramatic. As for Jordan and Julia, they hate James. I do not know the children as well as you. Can you help me understand who I am going to be dealing with?”

“Jordan is just a prick. He was he is constantly going into debt. Living beyond his means, Jordan always goes into debt and is constantly bailed out by Eleanor, who spoils him as he is her first child. He needs to learn how to be independent, which is why he got the smallest portion of the estate.”

“I gathered that once the entire will was read.” I said.

“Jordan was her favorite and the most ambitious of the children. She is a model who has supported herself since she was thirteen. She flanks the covers of many magazines in Europe and has a steady relationship with a French doctor whom she sees often. She genuinely loved her mother.”

“Julie is a photographer and has her own studio. Julia has always tried to be the best. She was always trying to please her mom and dad. Her father seemed a bit too touchy feely for me. He always had hair on his knee whenever I saw them together. It gave me the creeps. I mentioned it to Eleanor once, but she just said the relationship had always been like that and Julia adored him and hung on his every word he said. At Eleanor’s insistence, I let it go, but it still bothered me. When the father passed, it took months of therapy for her to accept that he was gone.”

“That sounds creepy.” I said. “Mr. Vaughan, I’m extremely glad that you gave me this inside who I am dealing with. I hate to cut you short, but I must get ready for my next meeting. I do apologize for having to rush off.” Standing up, I gestured for him to exit the door and enter the hallway. We shook hands, and he told me to expect a call from his assistant with dates and times for our next meeting before he left.

Back in my office Linda and my associate, Rhonda, were already waiting for me. “I have never been so drained, physically and mentally, after a meeting.” I said.

“Devon, you look exhausted,” Rhonda said.

“The yelling I heard was shocking in to say the least. I would have wanted to crawl into a hole and not come out until they were done. Oh my God Devon how did you do it?” Linda said, touching my shoulder.

“Mr. Vaughan gave me a heads up and how to react and I followed his lead. Let me just say I wanted to run. The son, James, does have issues. That room was full of anger for each other. I am glad this is over and thankful for Mr. Vaughan.”

“I am going to call it a day and crash at home, if you ladies do not mind. My head is pounding.

The receptionist stopped me as I opened the door. There was a huge floral display on the counter beside her. “Devon, these flowers arrived for you this morning” Both Linda and Rhonda were hovering. “Who were they from Devon?” They said in unison.

“I don’t know,” giving a slight smile and a wink to them. I took the card and removed it from the plastic wrap. “Come on Devo who’s it from?” Rhonda asked. The receptionist added, “this bouquet is stunning and there are so many flowers. See this pink one? It is hibiscus, and the hot pink ones are ginger flowers.” Linda said she loved the orange bird of paradise. There was lots of greenery, which Linda pointed out it was a fan palm and bird of paradise leaves. “Come on, who is it from?” They all wanted to know. After a quick peek, I put it in my pocket, saying it was from Margarette and how thoughtful she was. I knew they would all except that but that was really a lie.

Unconventional Dance of Chains - Laura’s Odyssey

Chapter 1:    Breaking the Chains

When I was thirteen, I vowed to let no man mistreat me, control me, or subject me to any sort of abuse. Witnessing years of torment had led to a decision, and the silent rage within me was like a tempest building up in the night.

My mother, a woman of unshakable strength and muted elegance, had bravely faced my father’s cruelty. His words were like a poison that seeped into her mind, leaving her feeling more broken than any physical harm. The sound of his voice, mocking and cruel, echoed in her ears as he publicly humiliated her. To him, it was a mechanism for power, a strategy to maintain her inferiority, as he frequently proclaimed.

Those who knew my mother pitied her in secret, but they remained silent for her defense. She knew they were talking about her, but she held her head high and walked confidently past them. It was as if everyone had agreed to be apathetic, a silent conspiracy of indifference.

My mother would often cry herself to sleep when my father stayed out late, leaving her alone to with her tears. Despite the pain inside her, she started each morning with a smile that seemed to light up the room. She moved about the kitchen, making coffee, as if everything was right with the world. Her smile was forced, as if she was trying to convince herself that everything was okay.

My mother was forbidden from socializing with anyone outside of her family. She was trapped in a world controlled by my father. She kept her confidante hidden, but their whispered conversations brought her comfort and solace. When I stumbled upon them, the sound of their sobs filled the air. The other woman’s visible bruises and cuts were a reminder of how easily life could take a violent turn. From a distance, I saw the way their eyes conveyed a deep sense of understanding and compassion, although I couldn’t make out their words. United in their grief, they forged a sisterhood that would never be broken. Their secret was safe with me, as I never let slip my knowledge of it.

It pained me to watch my mother struggle through life’s turmoil.   I made a promise to myself that I would never let any man make me feel unworthy of life. I threw myself into my studies, determined to excel and earn a better life.

It was a mystery to me why any woman would endure such abuse, yet my mother stayed in her marriage. I asked her one day, taking a deep breath before speaking. She explained that she had taken a vow to be with my father through the good times and the bad, in sickness and in health. She knew that divorce would only lead to more pain and heartbreak, so she refused to consider it. I scoffed, finding it hard to believe that anyone could think he was deserving of kindness. He’s a bad person. He deserves what’s coming.” But my mother insisted it was a sickness that had taken hold of him, a sickness that had brainwashed her into submission.

Over the years, I kept my promise to myself, refusing to let any man define my value and carving out a path for myself that was uniquely my own. As I set out on my journey, I knew it would represent freedom, commemorate my mother’s courage, and confront the shadows that had oppressed us for too long.

Throughout my university years, I bore the weight of my heavy secret, one that I kept even from my closest friend, Devon Cartwright. We both had dreams of successful careers, but our paths took unexpected turns that led us down different roads.

Driven by her passion to empower individuals to become financially self-sufficient, Devon set her sights on making her mark in the world of finance. My interest in comprehending the human mind and helping individuals with mental illness fueled my pursuit of psychology studies. Despite my expectations, my academic journey led me through uncharted territories.

I became a passionate advocate for women’s rights, throwing myself into the political side of feminism and fighting for gender equality. I broadened my studies to encompass not only the rights of individuals, but also the societal structures that perpetuate injustices. In the last years of my university education, I specialized by dedicating extra coursework to working with individuals who had Down syndrome and behavioral challenges. Supporting individuals with unique needs in a special home was a career path I once contemplated.

Later on, my research focused specifically on the lesbian and gay community, examining the issues of gays, lesbians, transgender individuals, and those who identified as queer. Upon completing my university education, I found myself lost at a crossroads, unsure of how to apply my expertise. My mind was overwhelmed with the choices of directions to explore.

The more I focused on my academic pursuits, the more Devon and I drifted apart. She immersed herself in the world of financial planning, determined to climb the corporate ladder and become a partner in her firm. The path to becoming a partner was not an easy one; it demanded years of hard work and a constant battle to prove oneself.

My journey of self-discovery led me to explore different cultures and lifestyles, hoping to find inspiration and direction. And then I met him.

I remember the night vividly – the clinking of glasses, the murmur of conversation – when I got up to use the restroom, I accidentally bumped a distinguished businessman, sending his drink flying across the room. To hide my embarrassment, I apologized profusely and offered to reimburse him for his dry cleaning. He declined and motioned for me to join him for a drink and some conversation.

I felt the warmth of the drink in my hand as we chatted, and the next thing I knew, I was standing in his penthouse apartment.

Daniel’s impact on my life was profound and unexpected. He revealed his interest in a dominant-submissive relationship, and, with patience and sensitivity, he showed me how to navigate this uncharted territory. Our journey of self-discovery, trust, and exploration was filled with moments of laughter, tears, and incredible growth.

I was hesitant at first because of the dominance my father had over my mother. My feelings were that no one person should be dominant over another.  But this was different and, with Daniel’s guidance, I became comfortable playing the role of a dominatrix. He willingly and devotedly became my subject, entrusting me with his deepest vulnerabilities and desires. We established a strong partnership by setting boundaries, maintaining open communication, and prioritizing consent.

As I grew into my new role, I was surprised to discover hidden talents and passions. My confidence and strength grew as I navigated the power dynamics of our relationship. The journey was a deep exploration of the psychological aspects of domination and submission, as well as the physical experience.

Our bond grew stronger as we explored the intricacies of our desires together. Through our unconventional connection, we discovered the art of anticipation, the dance of control, and the profound intimacy that could be achieved. Our relationship was a beautiful example of how embracing one’s true self could lead to deep connections with others.

Daniel showed me a path to liberation and empowerment, and I followed willingly. Our connection was unique and fulfilling as we shattered societal norms and embraced the full spectrum of our desires.

I broke the chains!  But now I own them.
